5 Things To Consider When Choosing An Easy Home Workout For Beginners

As you get started with your body transformation it’s a good idea to start with an easy home workout for beginners.  That is, unless you’ve been working out for a long time, and you’re a seasoned gym rat by trade.

There are a couple of reasons you’ll want to start your transformation process with an easier workout that you can do from home.

First, let me address the elephant in the room that everyone wants to bypass and get right into working out.  Your diet and nutrition is the single most important thing to nail down in order to burn fat, and transform your body.  Many say it’s 80% diet and 20% exercise, and I’d argrue it’s more like 98% diet and 2% exercise for a body transformation goal. So, choosing an easier workout in the beginning allows you to focus more on the nutrition.

Second, having the ability to workout from home takes away any extraneous factors involved around traveling to a gym.  You’ll automatically eliminate excuses like, “its raining out” or “the gym is so far” or the like.  It’s largely psychological, but exercising consistently is the number one key to success in any workout routine for beginners or otherwise.

With my little soapbox outta the way, let’s talk about the 5 things to consider when choosing an easy beginner home workout.

What Is Your Fitness Goal?

Ok, I’m not gonna spend a whole lot of time here since I’m guessing that your goal is centered around burning fat, losing weight, and getting lean and fit.  That being said, your overall fitness goal is definitely the main thing to consider when choosing any type of workout routine.

For improving body composition, resistance training is absolutely mandatory.  This is non-negotiable. However, it doesn’t necessarily equate to lifting free weights, bench press, squats, etc as many think.

Formal cardio training is not as important.  I personally lost over 60lbs, and know many others who have done the same by simply walking for their cardio training.  This is another entire topic, and I’ll dive into that in another post…

What Is Your Level Of Experience?

The obvious answer is “beginner” right?  That’s why you’re reading this in the first place.  However, I’d like to go a bit deeper and more specific here.  Here are some questions to ask yourself when assessing your “experience level…

1.  Have you been to the gym in the past year?  If so, how many times per week on a regular basis?

2.  What does your day-to-day activity level look like?  For example, are you a construction worker, landscaper, nurse, or maybe in the food service industry?  Jobs like these tend to have have higher activity levels than your standard office worker who spends most of his or her day working from a computer.  This plays a factor not only in diet and calorie consumption, but it also plays a role in how much energy you may have to put into a workout.

3.  Have you ever had any formal training?  i.e. sports conditioning in the past?  or maybe you played high school or college sports when you were  younger.  If that is the case, you may still be classified as a beginner, but having the athletic background will definitely help out.

What Workout Equipment Do You Have?

There tons of different types of home workout equipment out there.  Do you currently own any equipment?  Clearly, different types of workout routines require different equipment.  The good news here is that the options for both programs and equipment are great.

The type of exercises you do depends on the equipment you have available at home.  Some people have full garage gyms with free weights, barbells, plates, squat racks etc.  This option is some of my favorite types of workout equipment, and sadly it’s also the hardest to utilize.  fancy home gym - choosing an easy home workout for beginnersThis is especially true when doing an easy beginner workout from home.  This kind of set-up takes up a lot of space, has a relatively high cost, and takes the longest to set up.  So, I don’t recommend a standard garage gym for beginners.

That being said there are many equipment options on the spectrum from full home gym scaling down to literally zero equipment.  Yep, as a beginner you can do a workout that will absolutely get you results with zero equipment.

When you first start out, I do recommend a few items that are inexpensive, take little space, and are easy to acquire such as:

– Yoga Mat

– Weight Vest with the small 1 lb removable weights

– Resistance bands

– Pull-up bar

What about exercise machines?

Well, if you have the budget, you can get a really solid resistance workout for your entire body using a Tonal machine.  That’s a top-end piece of equipment, but it takes very little space 8′ x 8′ and offers tons of workout options including both resistance and cardio.

But like I mentioned, a yoga mat and a weight vest will get you very far.

How Much Time Do You Have To Workout?

Time is a huge factor.  People are busy.  And you’re committing some extra time each week to put work in toward your body transformation goals.  Most beginner workouts are designed to be done 3 days a week for about 20-30 minutes.man looking at watch - make time to workout

Here is a Rule to live by…

The best workout is the one you do consistently every week.

So, first decide how much time you can commit 100% to working out each week.  Then choose a routine that fits your schedule.  If you work with a trainer or fitness coach they will design a custom program that works around your busy schedule which gives you the best chance of success.

Unfortunately, I see many beginners fall for the latest fad exercise and diet program that is laid out, and created then sold to the consumer without regard of their schedules.  And, if it doesn’t fit into your lifestyle and calendar then chances of short-term success are very low.  Also, any chance of long-term success is practically zero with this approach.

What Types Of Exercise Do You Enjoy?

This plays into the workout schedule.  Not only should you pick a routine that you can do consistently, but find exercises that you actually enjoy doing.  If you’re just starting out, it’s ok to try a couple different routines for beginners to see what types of movements you like.  Remember, body transformation for life is the goal right?  Go into this with the mindset that you will be enjoying your new fit body for the rest of your life.  So, it’s ok to find stuff you enjoy doing.  The options are literally endless.

Conclusion

Okay, so we went over some really important things to consider when embarking on your body transformation journey.  Again, my purpose is to help you not only achieve an epic transformation and craft a brand new body, but also to help you become a fit and healthy person for the rest of your life.
